Now that you've read more about Descartes and his difficult theory, respond to the following quote:
To rest in the apparent and to mistake it for the real is the one general error, root of all others and the cause of all our stumbling and suffering, to which man is exposed by the nature of his mentality.

WHAT do we understand by "reality"? For those of us who consider ourselves realists, there is a kind of common-sense answer: "Reality consists of those things - tables, chairs, trees, houses, planets, animals, people and so on - which are actual things made of matter." We might tend to include some more abstract-seeming notions such as space and time, and the totality of all such "real" things would be referred to as "the universe".
Some might consider that this is not the whole of reality, however. In particular, there is the question of the reality of our minds. Should we include a conscious experience as something real? And what about concepts, such as truth, virtue or beauty?
wow Troy, I thought I was a realist, but now I'm not so sure!
The question of "what is reality" Does it really have to be something that you can prove? Can it be unseen? In the reading the past few weeks, I think there is alot that is unseen, but there somewhere!
I know I have told my kids that when reality strikes it isn't usually what you expected.
I get from this quote that you cannot believe what you see. You need to question everything. When you stop questioning and start believing what you are told (be it from your senses or from someone else) you fall into the trap of being deceived.
I think that this quote means that you should never let your guard down. Just because it seems like a good idea does not mean that it is. People get too comfortable in life and just let things around them go by. But when we do this, we are setting ourselves up for bad things to happen.
The way I interpereted that quote was that if we believe what is obvious to be real, then that is the biggest mistake we can make and believing that will lead to many mistakes and downfalls. To understand what is reality, we must look beyond the obvious and look at things a lot closer.
This quote to me is looking to far into a situation and over looking what is right in front of your face. I have read through the other blogs and can understand where you all came up with what this quote means too you. It kind of made me think more into this quote then what I had done at first. The insight from others is great!
Before Class...I feel like when I answer the questions we have for homework that my answers are not correct. I am not always sure if I am translating the writings correctly or not.
I think this quote is saying that reality is everything you feel and do everyday. It is also saying that you need to live for the moment and never take anything for more than what is.
I think the posted quote means that people make the mistake of thinking everything has to be real in order to exist.
Bryan I liked what you said about the quote. I think your statements fills my statement in further. I think you said what I could seem to get out.
Amanda, I think that part of the homework is letting others know what you think the quotes are trying to say. Your interpretation is correct to you. As long as you can say why you get what you got from the quote, it has to be correct.
I found it very interesting that so many people picked "Are Humans Selfish?" for their papers. I wonder if it hit close to home for many who see how people they know do act that way or if they themselves will try and justify why they act the way that they do.
I was surprised how many God related topics were touched tonight. I think those topics relate to reality for sure!
Missi......Great thought on the quote. I completely agree with you. So many people, including myself, look so far into situations and there is no need for analyzing every single detail. Pick your battles!!!
I think this quote means that you shouldn't look at things on how they appear, look deep inside. Reality is not always something you can see or touch, and don't take things for granted.
I agree with Bryn, I like how she intrepreted the quote. It is so sure that we shouldn't believe everything we see, things are deeper than they appear.
I agree with Bryn; reality is what you think it is.
Reality-I think can be what you think it is, but if you aren't in touch with reality, you see everything with your eyes only and not how others view it. For instance, some one who won't except an issue, they are living in their own little world, but reality is something they don't want to except. This could be different things, day to day life or even the loss of someone. Like today, in my world the sun is shining..but reality is it's raining! alot like seeing the glass half full or half empty!
Dara,
I agree to a point. Sometimes a person's reality is influenced by their own little world. If your world includes hunger or physical abuse, then the way you view reality will be different then someone who does not face these issues. Both versions of reality are true for each person.
Who defines reality? you ..
I agree with Nick about individual experiences effecting our perception of reality.
Reality is more than just what you think it is....I believe it also falls into what society thinks is the "norm".
sounds like this could be a deep conversation of what everyone thinks reality is...
I like Dara's comment on your own personal experiences becoming your own reality.
